You might think that more data means more information, but, unfortunately, it's not that simple. There is certainly no lack of data available nowadays, but that doesn't mean that there is also an equal increase of information to be found in the data. More data does not automatically equal better insights. The amount of data can, in reality, often obscure the information that we are looking for. It's good to have a guide through this data jungle, someone who can build bridges from data to insights.
These three activities also apply, and possibly especially so, in the field of (geopolitical) news. We are innundated daily with data, that's called 'news', but more often than not the news is more noise than signal, and the information to be gained from consuming news streams is low. So our first task is to identify the data sources, collect data, determine the reliability of data sources and items, and filter out the noise.
Even though my focus is on the data analysis, it is almost always necessary to design and build systems for collecting, normalizing and storing the data first before analysis can begin. This is a crucial step, so I do that as well.
In news on geopolitical events, I've been doing that, since 2011. Not as my main job, which remained in IT Security, Solution Architecting and Programming. It has since become my main job, especially after 2022.
Full-spectrum dominanace or full-stack service: From Solutian Architecting, to Data Collection, and Programming, to Analysis and Visualization and Presentation.
Designing solutions from the ground up or based on an existing solution, including defining user requirements and determining hard- and software to be used.
Programming solutions in Python, JavaScript, C#, PHP and occassinally Erlang/Elixir. This also included troubleshooting, debugging and supporting solutions.
Data needs to be collected, normalized and brought into a standardized and usable form before storage. Storage needs to be defined, configured and programmed.
Insights and patterns gained form analyizing data is often best presented not only in words, but alos in visual representations. The most prominent and common means are tables, charts and maps.
While machine translations are doing an excellent job in giving a general idea of what a text is about, knowledge of the language, country and customs still is often required to read between the lines.
In geopolitics, reading the news is an important part of the daily activities. It requires being familiar with several sources, traditional and modern, and being able to collect data and manage the information found.
Geopolitical analysis of events in the Americas, Europe, North Asia, and South Asia. The work is most visible and in demand during times of active conflict, but there is a lot of work to be done during peaceful times. Some of my work is public and for free, and some work is public but only for a fee. There is also customized private work, which is confidential and not public.
The public work is available under News OFehrMedia Geopolitics (nofm geopolitics)
Every Site needs a privacy policy nowadays, so we have one too. It's a rather long read, so we have our own page for it.
It's a lot of words, but unfortunately, it is required, even though next to no one reads them, and only a few actually understand what it says.
